Art 1 and Art 2 October 25

Art 1 and Art 2 October 25

This week we did not do any warm up or pre-drawing exercises but took a few minutes to discuss a few guidelines for adding expression in simple portrait drawing. Using a cartoon mouse face outline we drew six different expressions, happy, sad, angry, etc.

We discussed the importance of the picture telling a story and drew three thumb nail examples. 1. A cat with a sad face holding a sign that said, "lost puppy." 2. A picture of a cat with an angry face holding a baseball mitt and bat. 3. A picture of a cat with a disappointed face holding a, "he loves me loves me not daisy" with only one petal.

The artist were to choose one of three still lives to sketch and add an element so the still life tells a story.

Students in art 1 used pencil, students in art 2 used charcoal.

Any who need to make up lessons or want to have extra instruction may come to South Columbia Baptist Church from 630 to 830 Thursday night. Email me if you have questions.

Status Of The Long Term Project

Some have had questions about the long-term art project for this quarter.

The long term project is a self-portrait. We are approaching the portrait by doing several "Studies" before the final piece. Many times an artist will create several drafts or drawings of a project before doing the intended piece.

The first study, two weeks ago, was to be a self-portrait in values, not using lines but shapes in different gray tones it is like drawing in the shadows of the face.

The second study was to be a line study, the opposite of the first this one is only using lines, some students find sharpies help with this one.

The third study is to use a grid like we did in the class, we imposed a grid over the photo and drew the same grid on the drawing paper so with the assistance of the grid the student can replicate the image on the photo to the drawing paper.

The final assignment for the long term project will be assigned that with the assistance of the three studies done over the last month the student will do a final portrait. They will take two weeks to do this final "Masterpiece" in time to show work at the November family night. We will take two weeks because I am hoping to be able to have them bring the final to class at least once so I can give a little coaching.

I hope this it is a taste of foreplanning and using drafts to work out problems in a project while mastering technique.

Spectrum Lesson Plans Art 2 10/4/12

Art 2 10/4/12

For our warm up we will have three exercises.
     1. A practice blocking in squares using a different value for each square.
     2. We will practice basic circles going around and around each circle a few times to get the shape.
     3. We will use a scribbling technique to draw a turtle.

We will have a demonstration on perspective of receding sizes as they give the appearance of distance, such as telephone poles that are smaller as each one is further away.

We will discuss and draw some basic rules of facial anatomy, such as placing eyes in relationship to each other and the nose mouth etc.

We will have choices today students may choose one and spend the entire class time on it: We will focus on planing our work by doing a pre-sketch or study of the project first, followed by an under-drawing with a light pencil and developing the project with charcoal pencil.

Option 1. Will be a pumpkin drawing using a model of a pumpkin.

Option 2.Will be a collection of mantle clocks.

Option 3. Will be finding inspiration from magazines.

Option 4. Will be flowers in a vase.

For the long term project we will continue our series of self portraits this week we will do a portrait of our own face but using only lines- no shadows or shading. Students may use markers like a sharpie if they wish.

Our first project will be a pumpkin drawing using a model of a pumpkin.

Our second project will be a pair of mantle clocks.

Our water color projects include painting a seashell on a textured surface like sand- this project uses negative space to leave the sea shell white while painting the surrounding areas.

If time allows we will practice a portrait in watercolor.
