Spectrum Art II lesson plans sept 22

SPECTRUM HOMESCHOOL COMMUNITY

Art II Lesson Plans September 22, 2011

PRE CLASS: students present work done over the week for instructor’s critique. Review of last week’s technique. Only positive comments are allowed.

OUR INSPIRATION FOR TODAY: Our inspiration for today is “For by You I can run against a troop, by my God I can leap over a wall.” Psalm 18:29.
We all face problems; some come us unexpectedly, others we see coming. "For by You..." We have a companion, God, who willingly goes with us through our task. It is not by our ideas or inner strength that we overcome the challenges of our life, but, "By my God..." It is by my God. We must turn to God, and remember what we know about Him. With prayer I need to invite Him along to the battle. Christian victory is "By God." It is not just ''by God's help." No, that would suggest He is only a partner like a 50/50 him and me thing; instead it is 100% by God that I can run against a troop or leap a wall.  Like King David we must give credit to the power that accomplished a thing. David was giving credit to the One who truly deserves it.

INSTRUCTION AND DEMONSTRATION ON TECHNIQUE:  today we cover wet into wet watercolor wash, compositional problems with empty space and avoidance of strong lines that divide the picture, and the benefits of using darker hues to outline or complement and bring out brighter areas. A few words about how to take care of brushes.

CLASS PROJECT: A white flower; we will use wet into wet to paint all the paper except the flower there by creating an image of the flower in negative space.

At HOME THIS WEEK: Good drawing is the beginning of good painting so I gave out How to draw a cat on a fence, and how draw the old cowboy skill builders, choose one. Draw one other picture from real life of something in your room. Do two watercolors this week one using the wet into wet technique and one using the white of the paper to make a form it can be any subject you wish as long as it is white.

OPTIONAL  DRAWING LONG TERM PROJECT: Every week we will illustrate two or three sentences that are part of a story. This is an opportunity to draw. The title of this story is the “Mystery of the Lost Heirloom.” It will take place in a world or universe of your own creation “The mystery of the lost heirloom.”  You have done the first three pages last week this week do pages 4-6, Write “These are my family.” Draw the persons in your avatar’s family. Give them names. Make some young, some old some, men and woman. Give them names. On page 5; write “One night _______ (pick one of the old persons you drew on page 4), Gave me a special responsibility.” Draw the two of you at a table with a candle or lamp inside a tent or whatever your family travels in. For page 6 write, “It was to be the guardian of the family treasure a ___________.” You decide what it is, But it must be something you wear like old shoes or an old beaten up hat or one glove or a scarf or necktie or anything you wear. It can be silly.

WARNING: You are up to 6 pages. Do not get behind on this- last year those who did never caught up!

SPECTRUM HOMESCHOOL COMMUNITY
Art 1 Lesson Plans September 15, 2011

PRE CLASS: Introductions and getting everybody’s name right.

OUR INSPIRATION FOR TODAY: II Corinthians 5:7, ”We live by faith not by sight” To say we live a certain way is to say that way is in everything we do. IF we live by faith then faith in God should be in everything we do. You can start your drawing or anything else with a silent prayer for God to be your helper and your work to honor him. But if we live by sight we will be always judging the end too soon, like at the very beginning and may quit up or go against what God wants to do. If we live by faith we can keep going even if what we are doing doesn’t look beautiful at first; we believe God will make it beautiful when he is ready.

INSTRUCTION AND DEMONSTRATION ON TECHNIQUE:  The pencil as a tool, there are many ways to hold a hammer, so there are many ways to hold a pencil.

WARM UPS: 1. Triangles. 2. Irregular lines avoiding patterns like jigsaw puzzle pieces. 3. Grayation with tornados. 4. Scallop or wave patterns.

QUICK DRAW CHALLENGE: (A freeing up exercise). The instructor will example sketching a book in one minute. Students will be given 5 minutes to draw the old book.

CLASS PROJECTS: 1. Draw a hammer- try to use different ways of holding your pencil. 2. Draw your own hand. This exercise is to develop fresh observation skills. IE you have seen your hand millions of time but what does it look like right now?  3. We will draw three tennis balls giving attention to shadow. Instructor will draw an example of shading technique.

TAKE HOME SKILLBUILDERS: How to draw a sunflower.

LONG TERM PROJECT, required: Every week we will illustrate two or three sentences that are part of a story. This is an opportunity to draw fantasy and still practice what we are learning in class. The title of this story is the “Mystery of the Lost Heirloom.” It will take place in a world or universe of your own creation, it could be Narnia, Middle earth, fairyland, outer-space, medieval times or something completely unique that you make up,
On the first page of  a sketchbook set aside just for this project illustrate in your most artistic lettering the title of the story, “The mystery of the lost heirloom.”  Take your time, draw lightly at first and then go over the letters to make them look good. You might want to practice on a separate sheet of paper. Use a ruler to make things centered and straight.
The second page will be a picture of your avatar. This story is in first person and you are the person telling it so draw a portrait of your fantasy person. It could be anything, a dwarf, a fairy, a warrior, a gnome, troll, person, animal creature or something you make up. On the page in your best artistic lettering write, “My name is ______ (put your avatar’s name in) I am a _____ (tell what your creature person is).
The third page is a picture of some way of traveling, it could be a wagon, flying carpet, space ship, hippy van, hot air balloon with a house underneath or anything you can think of. Then in your best hand writing write I am a wandering musician and travel with my family in a _____ (Describe your way of traveling). Be ready to show your work to class next week.
WARNING: Do not get behind on this- last year those who did never caught up!

Positive peer comments are encouraged but it is my policy that no one is allowed to critique or adversely comment on another person’s work in class except the instructor.
