Summer of 2012

During the Summer break I will be offering a drop in art class at South Columbia Baptist Church Tuesday mornings from 9:30 am until 11:30 am, this is also during the Ladies Bible Study and is an opportunity for moms to come to Bible study while the kids get art.

Cost is $12:00 for the two hours. Group rates for a brother or sister apply and is only $5:00 for all siblings.

Bring art supplies pencil kit, paper, Water color set and water color paper.

Come when you can and pay for the lessons you take

Spectrum Art Show At The Howard County Libary

This month (May) the students of Spectrum Home School Community will be showing their art in the display cases at the Howard County Library on Cradlerock in Columbia. MD. It is a nice representation of a cross section of our students. Please come by and see.

UPDATE: I WENT TO THE LIBRARY TODAY TO PUT UP THE ART IN THE DISPLAY AND THEY WERE CLOSED FOR STAFF DEVELOPMENT DAY. WE WILL INSTALL THE ART ON WEDNESDAY MAY 2ND.

Update: The art is up come by the library and see it .

PRE CLASS: Students present any work done during last week for review.

CLASS PROJECTS: we will be using pictures  and various still life objects to draw. 

NOTE: For the last quarter students will explore the medium of their choice. Students may choose pencil, pen, watercolor, pastel, oil paint, acrylic paint, or any other art medium (as long as it doesn't  present a toxic or health risk).  If the student wants to bring oil paint or acrylic paint they will need also to bring a few pages of newspaper to put on the table so we do not damage the host's furniture, or bring portable easel to work on. 


I will have projects available and will circulate to each student to give as much individual attention as possible.

PRE CLASS: Students present any work done during last week for review.

INSTRUCTION AND DEMONSTRATION:  Giving a picture a sense of center by placing focus objects.

WARM UPS: Draw crystals and geometric shapes, focusing on strait lines. We will draw swirls in rows. Texturing like tree bark, fuzz (like a peach), dimple like an orange.

CLASS PROJECTS:  Drawings from magazines, various still life objects.   

LONG TERM PROJECT: on this page write “I couldn’t believe it!” Draw a picture of your avatar with a surprised face.

Next page write. Later my family and I moved into the palace. Draw a picture of your family in front of the palace. 

Next page write. “My enemy became the gardener and pulled weeds all day.” Draw a picture of the enemy working pulling weeds.

Last page. “I ruled the kingdom fairly and justly and we lived peacefully and well. The end.” Draw a picture of the crown or a portrait of your avatar’s smiling face but make it look super real.

PRE CLASS: Students present any work done during last week for review.

INSTRUCTION AND DEMONSTRATION: 

WARM UPS: blocks in shadows using different values of grey. Ocean waves.  Jigsaw puzzle doodles.

CLASS PROJECTS:  we will be using photos of sports athletes to put drama and action in our drawings.  Drawings from magazines.   

LONG TERM PROJECT: on this page write “I was confused." draw a picture of your avatar with question marks over his head.

Next page write. I decided to accept the offer to become king and put my heirloom in the fire. 

Next page write. “the heirloom appeared on the statue. And a crown appeared on my head.” Draw a picture of the statue with your heirloom and of your avatar wearing a crown. You can use two pagers. One for each if you like.

INSTRUCTION AND DEMONSTRATION:  Composition in a landscape showing that things are bigger when they are near and smaller when they are far.. 

CLASS PROJECTS: we will be practicing skills with drawing a clock, a box, a jar, and optional subjects from magazines.
